Practicing yoga at home is a great way to relax, rejuvenate and improve your flexibility. Although some people prefer to go to a yoga studio, you can get a lot out of a home work out if you buy some simple equipment. These tips will help you get started.

  1. Invest in a Yoga DVD – Yoga DVDs are the best way to get a full yoga workout and have the experience of being in front of a teacher. There are a lot of DVDs out there that offer a variety of yoga practices.
  2. Practice in the right place – Once you’ve selected your DVD (or DVDs), find a good place to practice. Practice on a hard surface, like a wood floor.
  3. Have the right yoga equipment on hand – You should have a yoga mat, a glass of water and a towel to complete your practice. Contrary to popular belief, yoga does make you sweat. The water will keep you hydrated during your routine, the towel will help you stay dry and the mat will help protect your knees and palms.
  4. Give yourself enough time – Make sure to allow yourself enough time to complete your practice without interruption. The poses should flow into one another for the best results, and interrupting them to answer the phone or talk to your spouse is counterproductive.
  5. Stick to a schedule – you follow a regular routine, you’ll see results in a matter of a few sessions. Keep your commitment to yourself to practice yoga at home and you’ll improve your health in many ways.

Finding a Yoga Instructor

Finding a yoga teacher doesn’t have to be a hard task. As yoga grows in popularity, more and more people are offering instruction in one of the various forms of yoga. When you find the right yoga instructor, your practice and your results will be greatly benefitted.

You can start finding your yoga teacher by deciding on what type of yoga you want to practice. There are many different types of yoga to choose from depending on your goals. If you want to increase your flexibility, lose weight or increase your muscle tone, there are types of yoga to meet your needs. Do some research on each type to find out which is best for you. You might also consider the types of yoga equiptment you may need – such as yoga balls or yoga mats.

Once you’ve narrowed down your preferred type of yoga, look online or in the phone book for yoga studios in your area. Gyms may also have yoga classes that you can take, or there may be individual yoga instructors that offer lessons in their homes. Make a list of the potential yoga instructors.

You can also ask around to get recommendations for yoga teachers. You may know someone in your circle of friends and family who already takes yoga lessons. Ask for recommendations for a yoga teacher from someone who has experienced lessons with a particular teacher.

Once you’ve developed a list from the phone book and recommendations, call the yoga studios. Ask about the teachers’ training, the rates and the classes available. Explain your goals to the yoga instructor and he and she should be able to tell you if you’ll be a good fit for the class.
